Compare the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot in Fredericksburg, VA

If you're shopping for a versatile and accommodating three-row SUV for your Fredericksburg family, it's hard to find a more well-rounded option than the Ford Explorer. It's a venerable nameplate and one of the most popular models in the United States, but it's not without competition. The Honda Pilot is one example. While it doesn't have Explorer's lengthy, it has been around for a while, a testament to its success. However, a head-to-head comparison with the Explorer reveals a few shortcomings.

Ford Explorer vs. Honda Pilot: Performance

Explorer's base 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine (300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque) quickly outpaces the Pilot's 3.5-liter V-6 (280 horsepower, 262 pound-feet of torque). And despite making more power, Explorer is also slightly more efficient, achieving an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined (Pilot: 23 mpg combined).

Explorer also offers three optional engines: Limited Hybrid (318-horsepower hybrid V-6), Platinum (365-horsepower turbocharged V-6), and ST (400-horsepower twin-turbo V-6). Pilot doesn't offer another engine.

Ford Explorer vs. Honda Pilot: Standard Features and Technology

Explorer comes standard with an 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Pilot's base trim features only a 5-inch display; a larger touchscreen requires a higher trim. Additionally, Ford's standard Co-Pilot360 safety package includes collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure mitigation, automatic high beams, and post-collision braking. Pilot also comes standard with multiple driver aids, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are missing from the base tier. Post-collision braking isn't available on any Pilot trim.

Ford Explorer vs. Honda Pilot: Accommodations and Utility

Explorer's maximum cargo capacity (87.8) is four cubic feet more than Pilot's. Explorer is also more spacious for passengers, with greater headroom and legroom in the first and second rows. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on Explorer, but not on Pilot. And ventilated seats are available lower on Explorer's trim ladder than Pilot's, which requires the top-tier Elite model.
