The 4Runner's lone 4.0-liter V-6 falls behind, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque while achieving just 18 mpg combined.

Accommodations

Besides more comfortable seats and smoother ride quality, occupants will appreciate the Explorer's roomier accommodations. Upfront and in the back, Explorer provides more headroom (40.7/40.5 vs. 39.3/38.6 inches), legroom (43/39 vs. 41.7/32.9), hip room (59.2/59.1 vs. 56.5/55.7), and shoulder room  (61.8/61.9 vs. 57.8/57.8).

Features

Explorer is more generously equipped than 4Runner. Both base models feature 8-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and several driver-assistance technologies. However, Explorer also comes standard with a power liftgate, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone automatic climate control, and rear parking sensors. These features are available on 4Runner, but only on upper trims, and some are reserved for the very top tiers.
